If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the makers of “Project Runway” must feel flattered indeed. But the new series “Face Off” (10 p.m., Syfy) is not so much imitation as mutation. Substitute the world of horror-movie makeup and special effects for runway glamour and high fashion and you have “Face Off.”

If you can’t handle folks with tattoos and body piercings, don’t watch “Face Off.” Two of the women sport the same retro Bettie Page hair bob, and the judges have the blustering exactitude of the Comic Book Guy on “The Simpsons.” There’s something endearingly nerdy about the whole affair.

You don’t have to love the comic-book/horror-movie aesthetic to appreciate the level of skill and hard work on display here. Every week brings new challenges, from creating an original horror villain to crafting an original zombie.

If Freddy Krueger took over “Project Runway,” it might look something like “Face Off.”

Most of them are heavily tattooed, pierced and favor black. Many have years of industry experience. One was nominated for an Emmy when he was 19.

In a familiar challenge, the artists are urged to use everything at their introductory party – even the waiters – to create an original face makeup.

Some of the prosthetics work is astonishing. Other pieces are bungled so badly, one proclaims to the judges, “I want to shoot myself in the face in front of all of you now.”

In another twist, the winner gets the right to consult with the judges – three-time Academy Award winner Ve Neill (“Mrs. Doubtfire”), Glenn Hetrick (“Heroes”) and creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos – on who should be eliminated, which adds a layer of strategy. Of course, the panel is free to ignore the advice.

Actress McKenzie Westmore (“Passions”) fills the Heidi Klum role, but at least she has a reason for being there besides looking good on camera. Her family practically pioneered the art of movie and TV makeup. Her father, Michael, worked on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and its many spinoffs.

Tonight, Bravo’s geeky cable sibling, Syfy, puts a monstrously creative spin on the talent search in “Face Off,” in which a dozen special-effects makeup artists compete for $100,000, a year’s worth of makeup and, presumably, bragging rights.

One of the first things I noticed about “Face Off’s” contestants, who represent a range of experience – one was nominated for an Emmy at 19, another’s fresh out of school, still another owns his own special-effects company – is their relative modesty.

Unlike the “Runway” peacocks, who may be dressing celebrities but whose business plans require them to try to become celebrities themselves, makeup artists, like most people working in film and television, know they’re there to make other people look good.

Pulling back the curtain on a part of the industry that should be near to sci-fi fans’ hearts, “Face Off” gives its contestants significant blocks of time to complete their tasks, including three full days for an elimination challenge in tonight’s episode.

“Face Off” is hosted by actress McKenzie Westmore, daughter of makeup artist Michael Westmore (“Star Trek: The Next Generation”), whose family has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their several generations of wizardry, and judged by Ve Neill (“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”), Glenn Hetrick (“Heroes,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Patrick Tatopoulos (“I Am Legend,” “Godzilla”).

The younger Westmore earlier this month gave reporters at the Television Critics Association’s winter meetings a quick primer on the family business: “When my great-grandfather was the wigmaker to the king and queen of England, he came over into Hollywood, opened a wig shop over on Sunset Boulevard.

Her grandfather worked on “Gone With the Wind,” and her great-uncle created the “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” she said. Her father’s “laboratory was attached to our house.

“For the most part, there’s now a ceiling, and if you can’t do it in ‘X’ amount of time for ‘X’ amount of money, they are just going to go ahead” and generate the effects differently, he said.
